Agentic AI and CIC Have Arrived: What It Means for Workflows and Compliance

Authored by: Jon Swisher

When you’re building technology, a year can be a long time. Last year at CommunityLIVE, we were talking, speculating, and dreaming about what the next year would hold, and this year we got to see it in action.

During the recent event, enterprises saw the Content Innovation Cloud (CIC) and agentic artificial intelligence (AI) come to life and show exactly how they improve workflows and ease compliance concerns that keep your teams up at night.

The event showed what AI can do now, which is much more than basic keyword and metadata extraction. The new technology understands how workflows are connected to documents, automates those workflows, and helps users spend more time on meaningful work instead of digging around for data.

How Does CIC Work?

Many attending the event already use OnBase, an enterprise content management and process automation platform that speeds up how organizations capture, manage, and share information.

During the conference, we had the opportunity to see how CIC builds on the existing OnBase foundation, adding new intelligence to an already very powerful framework.

That included intelligent document processing (IDP), knowledge discovery, and content federation services, all working together to make capture, classification, and retrieval faster and easier for teams. Here’s a quick breakdown of how that works:

  •  IDP uses AI within CIC to automatically classify, extract, and summarize information from documents, helping teams turn unstructured content into usable data faster.
  • Knowledge discovery applies AI-powered search to let users ask questions in plain language and quickly find sourced, relevant answers across their content.
  • Content federation services connect OnBase and other repositories to CIC, creating a unified environment where information can move easily between systems for quicker access and configuration.

Together, these technologies allow enterprises to extract important details, quickly summarize documents, and then return those results directly into the workflow, helping make processes much faster. And if that wasn’t enough, during the event, we also learned how Agentic AI can build “teams” to speed up workflows even more and support compliance.

The Role of Agentic AI in Modern Workflow

One of the most anticipated topics of the conference was Agentic AI. These intelligent automations help AI learn and collaborate instead of handling only a single piece of the workflow.

The agents can function autonomously but also keep humans in the loop. And that means presenting information and reasoning to users, allowing them to make decisions faster. For example, an agent might analyze a records management policy, determine whether documents should be retained or deleted, and then present that logic for human review before taking action.

This improves efficiency and strengthens accountability. When every suggestion includes a clear rationale and source, compliance teams can also verify that each decision aligns with regulations.

But of course, the potential for automation also extends far beyond individual tasks. Agents can also be linked together. For example, one extracts the data while another applies those insights within the workflow. This approach creates an environment in which routine analysis happens automatically, allowing teams to move faster and focus on higher-value tasks, like judgment and oversight.

A Future of Transparency and Trust

When talking about Agentic AI and agents, eventually the discussion turns to privacy and control. And it’s a legitimate concern. During the event, Hyland explained how content federation services allow administrators to define exactly which of the agents agents can access, read, or index. This type of careful training allows you to adopt AI safely while still meeting those internal governance standards and being mindful of privacy.

As we move forward, we might not know exactly what’s coming next, but we do know that improving workflows and staying compliant will continue to be priorities. And for enterprises looking to go deeper in these areas, the CommunityLIVE event showed exactly how Agentic AI and CIC can support these long-term goals.
